That said, today's discussion will focus specifically on Futures Fins 5-Fin Sets, what you can expect from a thruster vs a quad, when you should use a thruster vs a quad and we'll talk about specific sets within the Future Fins 5-Fin Set line. On a side note, what I personally like about any 5-Fin set is that you have options and I have written this article to help you discover them.
First off with a Futures 5-Fin Set you can choose to run it as a thruster, front two fins plus the trailer. I would like to note here that it is worth your while to buy yourself some Futures Fins box fillers so that you can fill the gaps left by any fin boxes not being used. Fins are all about reducing drag, so it doesn't make sense to research 5-Fins Sets, just to INCREASE your drag by not filling any unused boxes, in this case the quad rear pair. FILL THEM. Anyway, I like to watch the pros and see when they use which fins. I often find that during competitions guys are using thruster set ups when there's an open face to be had. If you think about it, the rear fin in a thruster set gives you a clear pivot point, this lends a thruster set-up towards quick directional changes, like hitting the lip or pivoting of the bottom quickly. Therefor, if you have waves with an open, ripable face, you probably want to run your Futures 5-Fin Set as a thruster.
Next, you could obviously choose to run your Futures 5-Fin Set as a quad, but when? And why? With a quad set-up, that clearly defined pivot point is gone and while the tail of your board does still act as your pivot point, with out that rear fin quick directional changes become less defined. However, if you're barrel hunting, switch to your quad. Trust me. When you have steep, fast, hollow waves that lend themselves towards barrels, you're going to want to lean on rail, pick your line and hold it. With a quad you're going to have two fins completely engaged with the water at all times, giving you the leverage and hold you need when barrel hunting. If you're having trouble getting barreled, this could be the missing piece, so grab your Futures 5-Fin Set and switch it to a quad.
Last, would you ever want to run all 5 Fins? No. Well... Yes. Kinda... If you remember a few years ago Kelly Slater was at the N.Y. Pro. and pulled the biggest no handed 360 in the history of competitive surfing. Not that you're Kelly Slater, or that you can do 360 airs, however he was technically using 5 Fins. Enter the Futures Fins Knubster, a small 5th. stabilizing fin that you can run in your 5th. fin box with your quad. I'm not going to pretend that I know the best time to throw in a Knubster and it may have more to do with your board than the waves, but that's the best part about Surfboard Fins, it's easy to experiment.
Now that we have a good grasp on when to use what concerning your Futures Fins 5-Fin Set, let's review a few of my personal favorites, after all it is my site. ;) Anyway, Futures Fins 5-Fin line is pretty sick, but there are definitely some standouts. Right now I'm loving the new Generation Series Fins from Futures and wouldn't you know two of them are 5-Fins. The Roberts and the Stamps 5-Fin Sets, which are both medium V2 Foiled fins. Because of their size and the V2 Foil, either of these Futures Fins 5-Fin Sets are going to suit smaller waves better. (Please check out their individual 5-Fin pages for a more detailed explanation.) Now, if the surf is PUMPING, I've been loving the bamboo in the Futures Fins FireWire 5-Fin Set. The size of these fins, the flat foil and the carbon with bamboo makes them excel in larger surf. Don't forget! All of the Black Stix 3.0 Fins can be turned into 5-Fin Sets by purchasing the additional Black Stix 3.0 quad rears, a Black Stix 5-Fin Set is SICK.
