There's one key element to longboarding that separates it from anything else. Noseriding. The classic "Hang 10", though for most of us hanging one or two is about as far as it gets. Longboards carry an inherent diversity that shortboards don't have and that's because of the length. More board means the potential for more rail engaged with the wave, sometimes that means you need less fin, sometimes that means you need more. Either way, if you're serious about your longboard, you should be serious about your longboard Fins, if you are you'll access your potential.
The first thing you need to think about when deciding on a Futures Fins Longboard Fin, is your surf style. Style on longboard is one of those things you just can't get with a shortboard, because of the the laid back approach you can take on a longboard. Are you trying for that elusive "hang 10" moment? Are you going for slow, laid back carves? Are you more of a progressive longboarder hunting barrels and steep faces? Do you think doing a "snap" on a longboard isn't possible? Put a 6 in. Performance on your Longboard with some sidebites and think again. Change your Longboard Fin, better yet have a few of Futures Fins best longboard Fins on hand and lets see what you can do.
Let's say you have a "shorter" longboard and you're gunning for "Ando's" smooth style, trust me, put a Futures Fin Ando longboard Fin on your longboard and get to work. That style I was talking about? With a little effort it will be well on it's way. If you want a traditional feel that will always help put you on the right spot on the wave, try a Futures Fins Performance Longboard Fin. In that case, if you're looking for noseriding go longer, if you want to loosen things up, try a shorter Performance. If you REALLY want to noseride and have a "log" go with the Futures Fins Rudder Longboard Fin and you'll be perched up there for days.
While I won't argue that being on a good shortboard is about how it "feels", I also know this is more true for a longboard. Being on a longboard can be super rewarding and is a skill in and of itself. Trust me, if you want to access your full potential, experiment with your Longboard Fin. Start with a time tested classic template like the Futures Fins Performance and go from there. With Futures Fins Longboard Fins you can even stay in the same template and go an inch longer or shorter to really dial in the feel you're looking for and just when you thought you were dialed, try adding some sidebites.
